Pipeline strainers are a type of filtration solution designed to collect solid particles from a fluid as it passes through a removable screen. In some cases the material collected is unwanted, although it may also be collected for use in another process. Pipeline strainers are the simplest type of filtration system, and like other filtration systems, are intended to protect valuable or sensitive equipment downstream.
The difference between a pipeline strainer and other types of filters is that pipeline strainers generally present low resistance to the flow. Strainers usually are intended to remove slightly larger particles, and they are designed to be reusable.
Types of Pipeline Strainers
Pipeline strainers have a long history of use in industry, with some standard designs, including simplex basket strainers, duplex strainers, and Y strainers.
Simplex Basket Strainers
Simplex basket strainers are used for systems that can be shut down temporarily to clean or change the strainer basket, and are used in horizontal lines where high flow is required.
Duplex basket strainers, which are also used in horizontal lines, have two separate chambers that can be shut down independently for cleaning. When one basket becomes full, the flow is switched to the other basket’s chamber, and the full basket can then be removed and cleaned.
Y Strainers (or Wye Strainers)
Y strainers mechanically remove unwanted solids with a perforated or wire mesh straining element or screen. Y strainers are often used where there is relatively little material that needs to be removed from the flow. Y strainers can be installed either horizontally or vertically.
Selecting a Pipeline Strainer
Pipeline strainer selection should take several factors into account, including the properties of the process fluid, size and properties of the filtered product, and whether the process can be interrupted for maintenance. The best strainer choice also depends on why the strainer is needed, whether that is to protect pumps from debris during system startup and flushing, to protect valves and instrumentation from corrosive products that become dislodged, or to protect centrifugal and reciprocating pumps that continuously handle materials containing solids.
